Whether you are looking to sell or simply change the atmosphere in your home, painting the individual rooms can go a long way. However, many are found asking themselves what color they should paint the room.
What if they pick the wrong color, and what does repainting do for the value of the home anyway? The questions go on and on; however, there are simple tools and guidelines to help you in your artistic process. Below are a few basic tips to help you pick the color that is just right for you and your home—and its future.
1) Everything is Black and White
Not a person of color? Does the whole concept of selecting a vibrant red or a plum purple terrify you? If you are not ready to take a major leap into the color department, white and black may be your perfect match. However, it is important to know what color goes where. Typically, white makes a space look larger. Thus, small spaces can often look larger than they actually are simply by applying a few coats of white paint.
If you choose to select a dark color for the walls, the room will often look smaller. In contrast, black or another dark color often does a wonderful job at accenting details you wish to accent. For example, black is often used for trims, framing, and detailing on surfaces. It tends to draw the observer’s attention in.
2) What Draws Your Attention?
If white and black colors do not really catch your attention and actually make you want to run into the room, you may want to opt for a more exciting or attention seeking color. Are you confused about what color is right for you? One of the best ways to draw in inspiration is to look at the items that you already love.
The green lamp, the vibrant blue pillow, or the red rug lying in your living room may prove to be just the inspiration you need. After all, you got those items for a reason right? Pick an item that draws your attention and consider using it for your color inspiration for the rest of the room. You may also want to think about painting one or two walls the same color rather than all four of them if you select an overly bold color.
3) Harmonize With the Already Present
One of the biggest factors that many individuals overlook is what is already in the room that cannot be changed. What does this mean? Often, old homes or homes with a great deal of character have brick or wooden walls. They are nearly impossible to replace or be painted over.
Thus, it is important that you select paint colors that harmonize with the colors that are already found within the home. Home owners will often make the mistake of not taking the brick or wood within their home into consideration when selecting room colors. This can leave the home looking scattered and unorganized.
4) What Are You Going For?
Finally, it is important that you know as a home owner just what you are going for. Do you want a calming presence, an energetic atmosphere, or a revitalized appreciation? Colors play a major role regarding our emotions and how we feel in particular places.
Thus, it is important that you speak with a professional regarding what colors make you feel a certain way. How do you want to feel in the room you are looking to paint?
